Circular Patchwork Baby Quilt                                             1

Beginner level.  Rotary cutting and machine piecing.  You’ll have a great time with this quilt.  No quilting or binding.  Assemble the blocks and you’re done.  A wonderful gift you can make in no time at all.  One session.

NOTE;  This class is being offered through the Germantown Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Germantown.
Classes will be held at the Pickering Center just west of Germantown High School at the Equestrian complex on Poplar Pike.

Classes are from 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm.

Germantown residents can sign up at the Parks and Recreation main office on West Street and pay their fees at that time.  A supply list will be provided.  We also have a kit that includes essential notions.

Confident beginner.  This pattern was designed by our own Rita Smith of QuiltSmiths.  These classes are the very first  for this pattern ever offered to the public.  So be the first to get in on this great class taught by the designer herself.  This pattern is unique and can be used as a baby quilt, in a little girls room, or your own grown up space.  QuiltSmart
Sweet Heart  interfacing is required for the class.  Three sessions.

Tumbling Blocks

All Levels.  This 3D effect quilt is made using not only light, medium, and dark color value fabrics, but also utilizes the Ardco metal templates.  This is a great stash buster, fat quarter, or charm pack quilt.  This is what scraps from other quilt projects became way back when our Grandmothers made quilts out of necessity.  You will love seeing the magic of the 3D design come to life as you hand piece this timeless quilt.  Two sessions.

Flying Geese Strippy Quilt

Advanced class.  NO PAPER PIECING ON THIS ONE!  Using the Square-In-A-Square ruler. Strip piecing is also used to make this time honored quilt.  Square-In-A-Square ruler necessary for the class.  Two sessions.

Faux Chenille Baby Quilt

Beginner.  Machine sewing.  Make a faux chenille quilt for a baby, table topper, or wall hanging.  You’ll learn to prepare multiple layers for machine quilting.  Then sew, slash, and bind.  The best part is when it’s all finished—wash, tumble dry, and watch your quilt bloom.  Unlike rag quilts this will not ravel.  Free pattern with class.  Two sessions.

Lone Star

Confident beginner.  Machine piecing and rotary cutting.  Quiltsmart has done it again.  This traditional pattern is easier than ever with their pre-printed interfacing.  You may choose a wall hanging or bed size.  Two sessions.  Quiltsmart Lone Star kit is required.

Dresden Plate

All levels.  Hand piecing, hand appliqué using Ardco™ templates.  Those of you who want to stitch by hand have requested this class.  Learn to piece the way your grandmother did.  Slow down, relax and enjoy the therapeutic effect of hand piecing.  Part of this project can be sewn by machine.

The picture is of a Dresden Plate block and is 14" square when finished.

All levels.  This is such a cool pattern  It looks difficult but isn’t.  Any color scheme will be great.

Beginner level.  Learn basic skills including rotary cutting, machine piecing, applying borders, machine quilting, and binding.  A wonderful baby gift, this will make you the hit of the baby shower!  You’ll want to make it over and over in many color combinations.

Cathedral Windows

All levels.  Hand stitching and easy rotary cutting.  This is a favorite technique that is very portable.  Everything you need fits into a small bag.  This block is traditionally made with a muslin background with brighter colors in the “window”.  You can update the look by using modern fabrics.    Just two blocks make a beautiful Christmas ornament.  It is a special technique with no batting and no backing.  What a stunning quilt it would be on your bed.

Lucky Stars

Beginner level.  Learn basic skills including rotary cutting, machine piecing, and blending various colors and designs.  This is a simple and easy to follow pattern by Atkinson Designs that can be made in several sizes from crib to king using fat quarters.  Our samples are pastel florals or batiks.  Any color scheme would be beautiful.

Snow Days Sweatshirt

Beginner.  Make a unique sweatshirt or jacket with wool felt appliqué and a few simple embroidery stitches.  Embellish any way you like with beads, buttons, or hand stitching.

Medley Opus (Sorry, this is no longer available.)

Advanced.  Rotary cutting, machine piecing, hand or machine appliqué.  This is an heirloom you’ll be proud to display and hand down to the next generation.  The Quiltsmart printed interfacing kit includes enough interfacing to make a lap to king size.  Kit does not include fabrics.   You’ll be amazed at your beautiful work, with a little help from Quiltsmart.  Medley Opus book and kit are required.

Tile Tango

Beginner level.  Rotary cutting, machine piecing, and applying borders.  Start with six fat quarters and have fun mixing them up.  It’s fun and easy to do.  Our sample is in brights, but it looks wonderful in your favorites too.  The lap size (54” x 70”) is a nice size quilt for sofa or chair or just snuggling.  You may decide to make a larger bed size quilt.

Patchwork Baby Quilt

A very traditional and simple piecing technique that depends upon color selection and placement to express you artistic ability.  Lends itself to stitch-in-the-ditch quilting to produce a completed quilt without waiting on hand quilting or a machine quilting service. Beginner level.

New Quilt From Old Jeans

This is a Quilt As You Go project utilizing your old blue jeans.  The solution for those jeans that are too decrepit to wear, but too loved to throw away.  A fast beginner project that is finished when you decide it is.

The DH Sampler

This traditional sampler quilt is made by piecing each block using a different sewing technique.  Many different block patterns can be used to make the resulting quilt uniquely yours.  Can involve appliqué, machine piecing, hand piecing, paper piecing, foundation piecing.  Skill level is beginner to advanced depending on the blocks you choose to include.  There will be at least one session per technique.

Wool Felt Gift Crafts

Elementary school kid level.   With the purchase of a kit, instruction will be given in the simple construction of wool felt ornaments that can be personalized to a family member or friend or teacher.  Purchase of kit required.

Five & Dime

Beginner level.  This is very quick and easy fat quarter quilt.  Any color scheme looks great.  If you’ve been looking for a pattern for your fat quarters, this is a good one.  Some pre-washed, and pre-cut kits available. Two sessions.

Folded Cutwork Appliqué

Beginner.  Learn the appliqué stitch and technique for needle turn appliqué.  This class is suitable for beginners and experienced quilters who want to learn hand appliqué techniques.  This would be great as a wall hanging or a table runner.

Twenty-five Patch

Confident beginner.  Rotary cutting, machine piecing, and applying borders.  You’ll have fun selecting prints and colors to mix and match.  Use as many different prints as you like.  Make it in a coordinated group of fabrics, or get out your scraps.  Book, “Best of Black Mountain” is required.

QuiltSmiths Class Policy

 

You are registered for the class of your choice upon our receipt of your payment of the class fee. At that time you will be given a supply list and any pre-class instructions. We cannot reserve a space for you unless you have paid your class fee.

We offer a 15% discount on class supplies as listed on supply lists. Due to copyright laws, we do not allow photocopies of patterns or books to be used in classes without written permission from the author. Please refer to class supply lists for information regarding a required book or pattern.

All pre-class instructions must be completed prior to the beginning of class to insure that the instructor will have maximum opportunity to assist you with all sections of the lesson plan, and to help you finish the lessons completely and on time.

If the shop or the instructor cancels a class, you will be notified at least 72 hours prior to its scheduled meeting. If the class is canceled due to a failure to meet the minimum required number of students, a refund of class fees will be given, or if the class is offered at a later date, you will have the option to take the same class at another date. We will make every effort to make each class a "go".

If you must cancel, we require 3 days notice prior to class in order to receive a refund. If you cancel with less than 3 days notice, you will have the option to take the same class at a later date, however, the class fee is non-refundable.

Due to space limitations and our desire to give each student individual attention as needed, classes are limited to six students—four for some classes.

Please do not bring children to class.

QuiltSmiths thanks you for your cooperation. We hope your class is an enjoyable experience. If we can be of any assistance on fabric selection, or if you have any questions, please let us know.

Note: *Make sure your sewing machine is in good working order. Clean, oil, and test run before class. We have a limited supply of sewing machines available on a first come basis. Please bring your own all-purpose sewing thread in a neutral color if using our machines.

You must know how to thread your machine, rewind the bobbin, and change the needle yourself. A machine with straight stitching capabilities is sufficient for most classes. We will notify you on the specific class supply list if special stitches (other than a basic straight stitch) are needed.
