TIES THAT BIND
Volume 1, Issue 6, December 2000

The first anniversary of QuiltSmiths is fast approaching. To celebrate, we are having a sale beginning December 9th. We hope that everyone who had the opportunity to shop with us during the last twelve months will take a few minutes to stop in. This is our chance to thank you for your business and your contribution to our success during our first year. We will take 20% off your total ticket-fabric, books, notions, patterns. We must be doing something right, we didn't lose near as much money as I projected for this first year. For those of you who have never run a business of your own, "profit" is not a dirty word, and we hope to make one some day, thus enabling us to continue offering quality fabrics, notions, and other supplies to quilters and those who love a quilter.

While here for the First Anniversary Sale, be sure to put your name and your wish list in the gift registry. Then just point all your friends and family to QuiltSmiths as they shop for you. Just imagine, fat quarter bundles and rotary cutter blades under the tree instead of World Wrestling Federation tee shirts, vacuum cleaner bags, and reindeer slippers.

The Uncommon Threads Quilt Guild "Quilt 'Til You Croke" retreat was a wonderful weekend for all who attended--including QuiltSmiths. We appreciate all the positive comments.

Newly arrived fabrics include batiks by Hoffman, brights by Yvonne Porcella, "Abstract Impressions" by Virginia Robertson, Fossil Ferns by Benartex, "Kids Undercover" by Thimbleberries, and many more beautiful fabrics in your favorite colors. We will continue to offer the newest designs, the best quality fabrics, and the best variety in the area.

The Cool Gadget Award goes to "Quilter's Tool Handle". A handy dandy plastic handle with suction cups for holding rulers while you rotary cut. Itıs one of those "I wish I'd thought of that" gadgets. Second place goes to the "Wristwrap" wearable magnetic pin holder, strap it to your wrist as you sew, or to your guinea pig to pick up dropped pins and needles as it scurries about your sewing room.

This week we are finalizing our new and improved class schedule that will start in January 2001. We will post the specifics on QuiltSmiths.com as soon as possible after that meeting. We anticipate many new class offerings and several new instructors. Are there any home schoolers out there who would like to participate in a "home economics" quilting class designed to count towards class credit for your home schooled child? If so, please let me know. This has been a personal goal of mine, as a way of raising up a new generation if quilters.

The two Pfaff 2020 sewing machines in our classroom are graciously provided by Gene and Kay Dobson at Memphis Sewing Machine. These wonderful, rarely-used machines are about to be replaced with two new ones, so the ones we have are on sale for $949 each (regular $1499). In my opinion their best feature is the built-in even feed foot, which is wonderful for exact piecing, quilting, and binding application. And there are over 30 built-in decorative and utility stitches-0what a great buy!

As I look back over the past year, I am once again awed by all of the help that Rita and I have received from quilters, many who have become close friends, as we set up the shop, fine tuned the inventory, adjusted class schedules, class offerings, various procedures, set up our bookkeeping procedures and all of the other various aspects of operating a business. My personal thanks to Kathryn and Kay for going to Quilt Market with Rita in October, as FedEx couldn't do without me at that time of the year. Also, again thanks to David and Mike for help with shop fixtures, furnishings, and renovations. Woody for allowing Yvette to work here, Nancy, Vicki, Connie, Keith, Kay, Kathryn, Debbie, Dana, Camille, Jessica, Karla, and Sandra for jumping in and helping Rita man the shop. And Jessica for reminding me how much accounting I have forgotten since getting out of CBC 21 years ago. Folks, that is one patient lady! Arenıt quilters just the best kinds of friends to have?

May God bless you all this Christmas season.

Michael Smith
