TIES THAT BIND
Volume 2, Issue 2, June 2001

It¹s that time of year again, the magnolia is blooming, the temperature is rising, and the humidity is running in rivulets. Ah, the South at the beginning of summer. Since the last Ties, AQS 2001 has come and gone, along with two bus loads of quilters from Japan, two mini vans from Baton Rouge, and car loads from Mobile, Biloxi, New Orleans, Birmingham, Jackson, MS, and places in Texas I can't pronounce, much less spell. What a week that was. All who came to the Secret Sale on Memorial Day received bargain prices on selected fabrics, as well as the May book sale items. (Just a hint, HOLIDAY = SALE at QuiltSmiths. Except Thanksgiving and Christmas, of course.)

If you missed the sale on Memorial Day, don't fret-it is still going on. All bolts with a red dot are 30% off until the boss (that's me) says it's over. We need to make room for all the new fabrics that are on the way. We did not go to spring market in Atlantic City, but we've seen most of the sales reps since market and have ordered lots of new stuff. We don't have a storage building, and due to another project, Rita's garage is full (and she really wants it back) so we need to sell some fabric.

Now let me announce a startling fact, Christmas is only six months and twenty-five days away. Now the reason I mention this is to remind you how long you have to complete that special Holiday quilt project for someone you love to love well beyond the year 2001. Just in are Thimbleberries Christmas Greetings fabrics. Very nice collection.

Other new fabrics are arriving almost daily. Cherry Berry Chickens and Floral Bouquets by In the Beginning continue to be big hits. Floral Bouquets has a beautiful book to go along with the fabric. Morning Glory by Robyn Pandolph for Moda is still very popular. Just in from Robert Kaufman is Watercolor Meadows and Fusion in fall colors. Basic colors by Hoffman Hand Painted Balis, Moda Marbles, Marble Mates and Marble Dots, and Kona Bay, have been of such wonderful colors and quality that we have decided to carry more of these than ever. Other collections are on the way from all the better names in 100% cotton, quilt shop only fabrics.

I had the pleasure of seeing several completed projects from Keith Davis's Snippets Sensations class. What an impressive bunch! Matted and framed, Jody Powell's wall hanging really created a wonderful presentation of summer colors. I can't wait to see Jody's spring, fall and winter themed wall hangings for a traditional Four Seasons display. Lynn Martin is hand quilting hers, and is putting the finishing touches on at this writing.

Vicki Person is one of our wonderful teachers who instructs many of our beginner classes. Our students really love Vicki for her patience and because her classes are so much fun. However, she occasionally creates a quilting monster. Jody Townley and Carolyn Smith are two recent quilt maniacs. Carolyn recently was embarrassed to tell how quickly she made a baby quilt for a baby shower (she didn't want to have to repeat the record time) so she told everyone it took a week! Jody is not much better. She bought all the supplies for a baby quilt and in just a few days she was back in the shop with the finished quilt! Vicki, how do you do it! We really enjoy seeing completed projects from our classes, so bring Œem by so we can brag on yours too.

Other new classes are Sunbonnet Friends-a miniature, Celtic Designs Wallhanging, Sweet Harmony‹a blend of hand appliqué and machine piecing, Basic Label Making, beginning rug hooking, and Chicken Chase Table Runner‹a little country. Check the Class Schedule for times and dates. If there is a class you want to take, but you can't make it to a scheduled time, let us know. We will add additional dates/times in the near future, or arrange a private lesson.

We have "Clever the Cat". This is the new pattern by Kringle Farm Quilt Designs, who also publishes the "Tussie Mussie Bouquet" pattern sets. For "Clever", Nancy Murray has designed a cute cat pattern that can be machine appliquéd. Nancy will be at QuiltSmiths to teach this pattern several times this summer. Be sure to check the Class Schedule for dates.

Switching from cats to dogs, be sure to come by and be welcomed to QuiltSmiths by our newest employee. Our official greeter is Ivory, Rita's new Golden Retriever puppy. Ivory came to us from Tennessee Valley Golden Retriever Rescue here in Memphis. This is a great group of folks who rescue Goldens from animal Shelters with time limits on how long they can keep an animal, abusive situations where other agencies are forced to take action, as well as situations where owners give up their pet, for various reasons, to be adopted into a new family. Let me just say, it was almost easier to buy a new car than adopt this dog. These people CARE where their dogs end up. You can check out their Web site at www.tvgrr.com. There are rescue organizations for most breeds, so if you are thinking about a new furry friend in your life, check out a rescued pet. I'm glad we did, and Ivory is too.
